80 years ago, in August 1939, the world was introduced to the classic tale, “The Wizard of Oz”, a film that sky-rocketed Judy Garland to stardom. Initially, the movie release at the box office had mixed reviews and it wasn’t until the movie was made available for television viewing in November 1956 that it received world-wide recognition.

We sat down with Art Director, Bree Spicer, to discuss in more detail about this pop-culture phenomenon and how Broadway Media integrated some classic elements of the story with our top-notch Scenic Projections show package!

Thank you for meeting with me today Bree!

So before we get into The Wizard of Oz, I wanted to take a moment and introduce you to all our readers who may not be familiar with you and what you do. I first wanted to ask, what is your background in theatre?

Bree: Sure of course. I grew up in Jackson, Michigan, where I led set design (and acted briefly) in high school. I was excited by the possibility of having a part in theatre again which is why I moved to California after graduating college to pursue my dreams of landing an illustration job. It was the perfect marriage of interests for me, connecting with my passion for scenic design, theatre and illustration (plus the warm California weather is amazing).This career fits my skills so well, and Broadway Media is an inspiring place to work, so much that coming to work every day doesn’t feel like a job! I’m able to have my hands in many different projects, art styles and direction, which provides a unique experience for our customers and collaborating artists.

Speaking of amazing artwork, let’s talk about “The Wizard of Oz”. Can you tell me about the process of creating “The Wizard of Oz” Scenic Projections show package?

Bree: Yes! I was the Art Director for everything scene by scene. The first thing I did was study the color palette, create a mood board, develop an art style. From here, I was able to lead the production from storyboards of images to the production of each image. The art process for this show took several months, and the results are amazing! I’m really proud of this show.

What would you say is your favorite moment or standout feature from the show? What would you say makes this different from our other shows?

Bree: I love that “The Wizard of Oz” has a common theme that is relatable for any generation. For the art, it's a very cohesive show and it’s this iconic piece of media that everyone knows and loves. The courtyard is definitely my favorite scene because of its depth. This musical is a classic -- everyone knows The Wizard of Oz! This translates to us and we were very careful to preserve what everyone loves about the musical and build upon its scenic potential. “The Wizard of Oz” features a universal story and we strived to preserve the classic elements while introducing new artwork.
