Heather, Community Manager at Broadway Media: Hello, Kristy. Working with Hands Up Silent Theatre is truly an honor for us. Could you tell us a little about your organization?

Kristy, Co-Founder/CEO/Director of Hands Up Silent Theatre: Sure! Our mission at Hands Up Silent Theatre is to encourage the d/Deaf/Hard of Hearing communities to learn more about the performing arts and to encourage the hearing to learn ASL and interact with d/Deaf/HOH peers. Our vision is to create performances for the d/Deaf/HOH and hearing communities to enjoy as one! All of our actors sign and voice at the same time to create not just an accessible but a truly equal immersive experience for all. I was a music educator for 10 years before losing most of my hearing in 2014. I went back to school to obtain a degree in ASL and Deaf Studies. My daughter Hailey, our co-founder, also has the same degree. She encouraged me not to lose my love of the performing arts forever and so Hands Up Silent Theatre was founded!

Heather: What an incredible mission! Thank you for sharing your story with us. I understand you have a very talented backdrop technician. Could you introduce us to him?

Kristy: I do! This is my amazing 16-year-old son Anthony.

Heather: It's such a pleasure to meet you. Thank you for taking the time to chat with me! First, I want to thank you for making sure our <a href="https://www.broadwaymedia.com/scenic-projections">Scenic Projections</a> look their best in every performance! How long have you been involved in theatre?

Anthony, Backdrop Technician at Hands Up Silent Theatre: I've been in theater for 2 years but I have been the backdrop technician for <a href="https://www.broadwaymedia.com/shows/disneys-beauty-and-the-beast/beauty-and-the-beast/scenic-projections">Beauty and the Beast JR</a>, <a href="https://www.broadwaymedia.com/digital-backdrops">Little Shop Of Horrors,</a> and <a href="https://www.broadwaymedia.com/shows/roald-dahls-matilda-the-musical/matilda-musical/scenic-projections">Matilda.</a> <a href="https://www.broadwaymedia.com/shows/disneys-frozen/frozen-jr/scenic-projections">Frozen JR</a> will be my 4th show.

Heather: You have done a lot in 2 years! What led you to become the backdrop technician?

Anthony: Well, I told my mom I wanted to help her theater in some way but not be on the stage. I was studying tech theater as my major in middle school and I really liked working the light board. But since the <a href="https://levoy.net/">Levoy Theatre</a> we rent for our shows has a light tech my mom suggested I do the backdrops. My mom thought this role was best for me because I have super focus due to having autism.

Heather: How long did it take you to master <a href="https://help.broadwaymedia.com/category/130-stageplayer">StagePlayer</a>?

Anthony: Not really that long. With the help of mom setting it up and teaching me I got it down within a day. I was only 14 when I did my first show.

Heather: What is your favorite part of running the projections?

Anthony: My favorite part of running the projections is looking up and seeing the animations. I think Matilda has so far been my favorite because it's the only show that has animations that last more than a few minutes.

Heather: What advice would you give to someone using projections for the first time?

Anthony: The main thing would be to stay as focused as you can. Timing is a big key factor in this role. Don't go off task and get distracted by your phone. Put your phone on silent.

Heather: That’s excellent advice! Making the magic happen behind the scenes is a really important job. Hands Up Silent Theatre is really lucky to have you! Can we expect to see you running the projections for years to come?

Anthony: Yes! I am expecting to stay with Hands Up Silent Theatre for many years. I would love to be a backdrop technician full time for all of our local theaters!

Heather: Well, the sky's the limit. We can't wait to see what you do next!

Broadway Media Sits Down with Director & Backdrop Technician at Hands Up Silent Theatre

Let’s get started with the basics. Here are the three necessities to run projections in your theater:

1. A light colored projection surface - This can be an existing cyc, scrim, painted back wall, painted flats, or dead hanging muslin. Keep in mind that your surface texture will be visible. If you decide to hang muslin, be sure to weight the bottom with washers or pvc pipe. You can also build a wood frame and stretch the muslin to create a large, removable canvas.

2. A playback device - Mac or PC to run the StagePlayer software and an HDMI or CAT6 Cable to connect to the projector. For distances under 50 ft we recommend an HDMI connection and feeding the HDMI cable down the grid to run the projections from the wings. If you prefer to have the projectionist running StagePlayer from the booth in the rear of the theater, a CAT6 cable will be required.&nbsp;

3. A short-throw projector with a minimum of 5k lumens (lumens is the measurement of brightness of the projector). A projector under 5k lumens and a width over 16 ft will not produce an image bright enough to combat being washed out by stage lighting.

Projections will work with any projector, but it’s important to keep in mind that the quality of your image output is dependent on the projector itself. Projecting a large (over 40ft wide) AND bright image can prove to be costly, and often overpower your stage. There are many ways to produce a bright and crisp projection using a lower grade projector. 

You can achieve a brighter image by reducing the size of the projection and thus cutting costs on hardware rentals. Think of a projector like a flashlight. As you shine the light against a wall and walk towards the surface, the circle of light gets smaller, but brighter. As you walk away from the wall, the circle gets bigger, but dimmer. The same is true of a projector. 

One of the easiest ways to reduce the width of your projected image is to bring the travelers in on the sides. You can also dead hang complementary curtains that correspond with the theme of the show to jazz up the classic black travelers. For example, using free form, green fringe dropping down from the fly for a production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid during the scenes that take place under the sea, give the illusion of seaweed dancing in the wings all while framing your projected backdrop to fill the whole stage. Strategically adding twinkle lights throughout can also serve as a representation of fireflies in weeping willow branches during “Kiss the Girl”.

Another avenue to explore is adding built-set elements downstage of the projection surface. This creates depth, allows for new options for blocking an entrance, and can incorporate traditional design like groundrows and platforms.

We saw this successfully implemented for a production of Mamma Mia! This production used a reduced width upstage center projection surface for their backdrop replacement, and integrated built Taverna flats (each with entrances) downstage left and right of the surface.&nbsp;

For theaters without the ability to mount the short-throw projector onstage, we’ve got you covered. You can rear or front project from the ground, a table. or built-in shelves within platforms placed in front of the projection surface.&nbsp;

It’s important to note that there will be a vertical shift of the projected image when using a fixed lens projector from the floor, meaning the image will start above ground level. Use a platform downstage of the projector or design a “groundrow” scenic element downstage of the projection surface is great way to avoid a gap between the floor and the image. This will help create parameters for the actors to walk about the stage without casting shadows, help protect the projector itself as well as cover the projector from the view of the audience.&nbsp;

Staging “magic” in productions in traditional theatre without the help of projections can prove to be extremely challenging. Roald Dahl’s Matilda is a perfect example of a production that has moments that are impossible to manifest or even imply without the use of projections. The magic chalkboard setting is a must-have. Broadway Media’s official MTI approved Scenic Projection show package includes 2 different versions of the “Chalkboard R-E-V-O-L-T-I-N-G” scene to fit the needs of your production. Option 1 is a full backdrop replacement of the classroom with the chalkboard included in the illustration. Option 2 is the magic levitating chalk and writing on a black background. This version allows for the setting to be projected on a physical chalkboard. A clever staging of Option 2 is to put one of the children’s desks downstage and facing the chalkboard, with a small classroom projector built into a cubbyhole. This allows for the backdrop to be projected from the rear, while integrating a physical chalkboard for interaction with the actors, without sacrificing the magic.&nbsp;

Speaking of magic, “A Whole New World” from Broadway Media’s Disney’s Aladdin JR Scenic Projection show package transports the audience on a believable magic carpet from Jasmine’s balcony up through clouds and starlit sky. The traditional staging of this musical number relies heavily on the audience’s ability to read between the lines as well as extra stagehands on the crew. A common way to create the illusion of flying is to put a rolling cart on a pulley system with 4 stage hands (2 per side) to pull the actors across the stage, drape the whole stage floor in black fabric and then place the carpet on top of the rolling cart, with the actors on top. Using the projections on our upstage projection with the magic carpet stationary center stage, takes 2 clicks of your mouse: “blackout” and “cue next”. Think about adding a special “wow” factor to the magic carpet set piece, such as small fog machines mounted on the underside of the platform to create clouds while it “soars” through the air.

Production with multiple quick scene changes can prove to be problematic for theaters with small stage crews. Disney’s The Little Mermaid has a number of rapid transitions from land to sea that take precision and a ton of extra hours to get the tech of the show down perfectly. Traditional staging utilizes hydraulics for Eric’s ship and flying the actors portraying Ariel and Eric for the drowning sequence. Most theater spaces do not have the massive space required to implement this design successfully. Scenic Projections are perfect for productions such as this, with a large number of moving parts. Every element requires extra attention. Projections allow for Ariel to seamlessly transition from land to sea and allows for more focus on her costume change from fin to legs.&nbsp;

Digital scenery should be used as a tool to relieve the pressure of producing recognizable show moments to complete the story. Here’s to the MacGyvers of our industry!

Led by award-winning educational drama director, Jennifer Hemme, the production incorporated projections using mapping and physical elements on-stage and a projected proscenium to create a fully immersive, animated show – a tremendous technological leap in the world of high school theatre that truly demonstrates the versatility of our digital scenery. ‍

Broadway Media: Hi, Jen! Thank you for taking the time to chat with me and reflect on Matilda The Musical. You’ve paved the way for many schools to integrate digital scenery, and you’re obviously very well-versed in the integration process. Can you share your experience and decision-making process with our readers who may be thinking about using projections for the first time?

Jennifer Hemme: Hi, it’s my pleasure! First, I always think that projections are best utilized along with practical (or conventional) scenery elements for a show – although you can simply use projections alone. Being in educational theatre, my job is to bring as many students – and as many fields of study related to theatre – as possible, into any production. I always look for opportunities for my technical theatre class to construct something that can serve multiple purposes for a show. Once I've reviewed the artwork and devised physical elements, I decide what, and how many, specific projectors I should use to cover the surfaces, taking into consideration brightness, distance and the limitations of the space. I’ve often used a single projector, but for Matilda, we wanted to utilize projection mapping techniques, so I used multiple projectors. I’m glad to have a team on-hand (I’ve also done a lot of it myself) to make it happen.

Broadway Media: Did projections help with any scenery challenges in the script for Matilda?

Jennifer: Matilda includes quite a number of scenes and settings – the school, Miss Honey’s house, wormwood motors (to name a few) – and they move between them quite rapidly. That, alone, is a challenge for conventional scenery and can quickly become overwhelming on the budget and time. Being able to have those settings at hand and quickly move through them is a real lifesaver. I haven’t even mentioned the acrobat sequences and, for most, it’s simply not achievable without projections. They’re so intrinsic to who Matilda is (and the show), having animated projections for those moments was wonderful. Once you add those physical elements like the hospital gurney, some school and home furniture, you can create a scene with visual depth and give the actors items to interact with – it ties everything together.

Broadway Media: Did you have to adapt any of your initial vision for the show to account for the projections?

Jennifer: No, not really. It’s a matter of planning and carefully reviewing the materials beforehand. It will deeply influence your vision for the show once you’ve reviewed the projections. The projections of the story coming alive as illustrations was truly magical.

Broadway Media: The experience is obviously different from using physical backdrops. Is there any advice you would give to other theaters who have not used Scenic Projections before?

Jennifer: Yes, absolutely. Projections can be much more interactive than you think. Plan ahead, if it’s your first time to rent, it will take a little longer than you might think just to work out some of the kinks... and definitely spring for the ultra short-throw lens! It takes a lot of worry away with avoiding shadows, and gives you so much more flexibility for staging. &nbsp;Nonetheless, I would absolutely recommend projections. It’s game changing!&nbsp;

Broadway Media: Okay, time for the big, scary question. What was your experience working with the team at Broadway Media?

Jennifer: Broadway Media is so accommodating and flexible to work with! I could not ask for a better partner in my production team!&nbsp;

Broadway Media: Phew – that’s a relief! Fun question: What was your favorite moment from the show? 

Jennifer: The page turning with the actors coming out of the projection! The end of the show when the projections turn the page to “The End”. Ugh it was exactly how I envisioned it! 

Broadway Media: I love it. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with everyone! Last quick question – what was it like for your production team to work with projections? 

Jennifer: It would have been super easy if I had chosen to use them on a full stage cyclorama, like I often do, but adding the various surfaces and masking areas made for a great challenge, but the result was well worth it!
